What is ABA?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
is a scientifically validated approach for the treatment of the core deficits of autism spectrum disorder. The aim of ABA treatment is to increase behaviors that are helpful and decrease behaviors that are harmful or present a barrier to learning. ABA can help with communication and language development, social skills, and the reduction of problem behavior.
Language
Children with ASD often demonstrate difficulties in developing functional language and understanding the language of others. Some children may also display repetitive or rigid language and/or poor nonverbal communication skills.

Socialization
Social deficits commonly associated with ASD include difficulties initiating social interactions or responding to the initations of others. Some children may also have difficulty maintaining eye contact and interpreting the body language of others.

Behavior
ASD is often characterized by restrictive and/or repetitive patterns of behavior that can interfere with learning and social interactions. Some children may also engage in problem behavior that can cause harm to themselves or others.

    1. Diagnosis
The first step in recieving ABA therapy is obtaining a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). An autism diagnosis is necessary to streamline the insurance-coverage process.
ASD can be detected as early as 18 months of age. If you’re interested in receiving an evaluation, begin with your family doctor, who will rule-out any underlying physical illness that may be affecting your child’s behavior. Your doctor may refer you to a psychiatrist or psychologist for an in-depth assessment.

    3. Evaluation & Assessment
The purpose of the intial evaluation and assessment is to identify areas for growth in each of the core deficit domains of ASD (i.e., behavior, communication, and socialization).
Results of the evaluation, along with our service recommendations, will be summarized in the form of a report and treament plan that will be submitted to your insurance provider to secure funding.
    4. ABA Therapy Sessions
ABA sessions are designed specifically for each child based on their treatment plan, and range in duration depending on their needs. Sessions typically consist of a combination of one-to-one and group teaching, in which they work on their individualized communication, socialization, and behavioral goals. Therapy sessions can be conducted at home, school, or at our therapy center located in Verona, NJ.
